I decided to put together a list of all the little things I buy when I’m starting a cut. These items are everything I use to make the process as painless as possible. In fact, it can become quite enjoyable.
Some items you may find surprising. But here’s the deal: I stay pretty lean all year, so I only need to cut for 2/3 weeks or thereabouts. So if I’m having drinks artificially sweetened, it’s because it’s a temporary measure.
Other items I only use near the very end – like egg whites. As time goes on, I lose some yolks, and increase the number of whites.

Mark’s Cutting Starter Pack
(1) Unsweetened Almond Milk
I use unsweetened almond milk/drink instead of cows milk for the last week or 2 of a cut. Why? It’s 13 Calories v 50 Calories per 100ml.
That’s about 1/4 the calorie count and I like the taste of almond milk. Make sure it’s the unsweetened version. Any brand is good. I’m using Almond Breeze, but they’re all pretty much the same.
(2) “Slim Noodles”
Virtually calorie-free noodles. They don’t really taste like anything, but you simply mix it with the other food on your plate. Slim noodles are much better than Shiratki noodles, which stink! Slim noodles are thinner and not as rubbery! Over here you can pick them up in Holland & Barrett and Asda.

(3) MORE COFFEE
Yep, I buy and drink more coffee – for the caffeine content. Caffeine:
- Suppresses appetite
- Increases energy
(4) Walden Farms Sauces & Syrups
No calories. Allows you to put some syrup on those pancakes with no caloric cost whatsoever! I use my “Cutting Pancake” recipe from my Buff Baking cookbook.
(5) Zero Drinks
This actually feels like a treat to me when cutting. Since I don’t drink these things the rest of the year, it feels like I’m being naughty. Coke zero, sprite zero…whatever. I’m no fan of artificial sweeteners, but when I know it’s only for a couple of weeks, it’s not going to be a problem.
(6) Sugar-Free Gum
No explanation needed. I just like a piece of gum now and then. Plus, sometimes your breath doesn’t smell the best when you’re burning a lot of body fat (due to ketones).
(7) Sugar-Free Jelly (Jell-O)
Calorie-free dessert. Simple. Consider topping with some of that calorie-free syrup I linked to above.
(8) A Boat-Load of Broccoli
I eat A LOT of fibrous and salad veggies when cutting. You can REALLY fill your stomach up for very few calories. I like:
- Green beans
(9) Nandos Sauce
14 Calories per tablespoon. Tastes great on chicken and turkey. Tesco stocks it.
(10) Low Cal Mayo and Salad Cream
This is something I factor in towards the tail-end as I taper down my calories. About 15 Calories for a tablespoon. So I stop using regular mayo and use this.
Salsa is always good. But as long as it’s not sweetened, it’s super-good on a cut. About 8 Calories per tablespoon – you really can’t go wrong here 🙂
(12) Egg Whites (liquid and powder)
I get egg white powder from MyProtein (just mix it with water) and I also buy Liquid egg whites (“2 Chicks” brand) from Tesco. Like the fibrous veggies mentioned above, the main benefit is you get A LOT of food for very few calories.
