You can make a low carb, protein-packed version of Burger King’s Whopper which tastes just as good as the original!
This came about when I recently had a whopper while out shopping with my girl (weekend carb-up). It tasted so good I was determined to make a low-carb version that I could hold in my hand and eat, but how without a bun?
Well, I succeeded and over the past week or so I’ve been having 2 of these babies for my main meal, which is eaten pre-workout.
This burger is high in flavor, crunch & moisture.
BK Whopper Ingredients:
- Beef mince for patty
- Tomato
- Onion
- Real Cheese Slice (Optional)
- Dill Pickle / Gherkin (Optional)
- Ketchup (get the lowest carb one you can find)
- Mayo
- Lettuce – use iceberg for the crunch
Both cheese and gherkins are optional depending on where in the world you are. I use cheese but didn’t have any when I was making this today.
Instructions
Take your mince/ground beef and roll it out into a big patty. I really do mean big here, you need a wide base to fit all the ingredients on.
Now brown the patty. Optionally, you can salt it while it is cooking.
While you are waiting, get a big lettuce leaf and set of a plate, this is your bottom ‘bun’ and will allow you to hold the burger in your hand. Now rip up some more lettuce and lay it on top of the leaf.
Make 2 slices of tomato and slice your cheese (if you didn’t by it pre-sliced). Now cut your onion, ring-style, not diced. Big rings work best and I recommend you keep them raw for the crunch.
Once the patty is done set on the bed of lettuce and place your cheese on top first. Now add your tomato, onion rings, pickle, ketchup and mayo.
In order to hold this bad-boy in your hand, place another large lettuce leaf on top and enjoy!
I promise you this will be one of the most delicious burgers you taste! It comes in at a measly 2.5 grams of carbs per burger (from the tomato, onion and ketchup).
By the way, if you’re in the UK or Ireland pick up ‘Herbert Felix‘ brand of ketchup from Tesco – 1 gram of carbs per 10 gram serving.
Don’t miss out on this one. Get your ass into the kitchen now!

Cool! And I didn’t know about that ketchup, Mark, thanks. I’ll have this for tea tomorrow evening.
Thanks man. Yeah I was looking at the labels on all the ketchup bottles just in case we had a low carb one over here. To my surprise there it was 🙂 There is splenda in it though in case you don’t take sweeteners.

Hey Mark,
Looks like a great way to have a burger without all the carbs! I’m like you – I love a good whopper from time to time!
Yeah only my carb ups have all been very dirty lately, lol. Must be the winter or something, haven’t had a clean carb-up in weeks. Then there’s Christmas coming too 😉
The Burger Kings, the one near my house at least, will actually give you the option for low-carb. They do not ask you if you want low-carb, but if you ask for it they do make it. Their website has the nutrition information about it as well.

Wow! Great recipe Mark – this is the perfect answer for the burger lovers in us. It’s so much better than waiting for the weekend. Thanks!
That’s cool Rob, I didn’t know about that.
@ Flest, exactly – I couldn’t wait either 😉
Looks awesome man. Can’t wait to cook myself one of those – probably towards the end of the week cause I’m fasting today.
shot Markus! rutabaga fries with that and coke zero? peradventure? lol! i always have a dirrrrtay carb up its sweet as still building muscle and burning fat like clock work! oh and Mark on my week off from working out i built 2.5kgs of lean mass! lovely! 😉 i might try working out every other week for a laugh! see what happens, im in no hurry to build a great physique, in fact impatience is a stumbling block, yet people thrive on it to their own detriment! Impatience can cost you your life!
Recovery needs to be looked at more closely!
This looks great! I’ve always added an egg into the minced meat when making burger patties. It helps hold them together and gives added protein. Mmmm!
I’ve been eating something similar
500g Lean Mince
1/2 tsp Salt
Worcestershire sauce
A blob of garlic puree
A little dried oregano
+ low carb ketchup
sometimes with a scrambled egg on top.
The lettuce idea is great 😀
Wondering if I could use lettuce for sandwiches too – I guess microwave to wilt, wrap around and refrigerate for a short while might do the trick.
One could also buy low carb bread too!
