According to a new study, eating these for 30 days can add 2lbs of muscle, while at the same time, melting away 2lbs of fat…without changing anything else in your diet or lifestyle.
You’ll never guess what it is?
I couldn’t either.
Here’s what happened…
23 people between the ages of 18 and 65 were recruited to eat 12 green olives a day for 30 days at the University of Palermo [1].
The result…
On average, subjects gained 1kg (2.2lbs) of muscle and lost 1kg (2.2lbs) of fat.

The researchers were actually looking for probiotic, antioxidant, or anti-inflammatory effects of Nocellara del Belice Green Olives. Not changes in body composition.
So what could explain this result? I definitely can’t be sure of that. The researchers wonder if perhaps the Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) levels in the olives could explain it. They said…
“The possible explanation could be linked to the capacity of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) to reduce body fat levels. The molecule is present both in extra virgin olive oil and table olives, and can also be produced during their digestion.”

I have to admit, the only time I eat olives is when I go to Subway…and that’s not very often. Do you eat olives often? They’re definitely great for a salad or sub – and now that it’s summertime, I’m gonna get some olives thrown into my summer salads!

So, the story on Green Olives is pretty interesting. However, I’m on a low sodium diet and every mg counts. Green Olives tend to be a bit high. Black Olives are lower, would a switch still work? Thanks.
Interesting as always Mark. The problem with the study however is that it doesn’t tell us the other diet of the individuals. Did they stop eating anything else but olives? If not, what else were they eating? Were they also exercising or what were they doing to gain muscle?
In the Mediterranean they do consume a lot of carbs, pasta breads etc. If they were to stop that and only eat Olives (or anything else) then it would be natural to lose weight I would think?

@Curt. CLA may have some effect, it’s just that I’ve never seen results this profound from it. So honestly, probably not – not like this, anyway.
