5 SYMPTOMS OF A SLOW METABOLISM
(1) YOU’RE NOT LOSING WEIGHT DESPITE BEING IN A CALORIE DEFICIT
You’ve been dieting all week. You’re definitely in calorie-deficit. You hop on those scales at the end of the week and…you lost nothing!
If you’re finding it almost impossible to lose weight, your metabolism must be slow.
And in this case I know what did it. You cut calories too fast, too soon. When cutting fat, your calories must be tapered back slowly week after week. This ensures ongoing fat loss. If you take the radical approach, you’ll stall and get nowhere.

(2) YOUR BODY IS COLD
Have you ever been around a dieting lady who’s always complaining about being cold? When this happens, ask can you feel her hands; you’ll notice her fingers are freezing. It’s especially noticeable around the extremities – the fingers, toes, even ears.
What’s going on? A large part of our energy expenditure goes towards keeping our bodies at a certain temperature. If energy/calorie intake is cut by too much, your body will seek to preserve its energy by allowing the body to function at a lower temperature (like using less coal in a fire). So a clear sign of a slow metabolism is that you feel colder than usual.

(3) YOU FEEL TIRED MORE THAN USUAL
As in point (2), it’s about preserving energy. Your body slows everything down to save its now-precious energy/fat stores. The result is that you just don’t have the same mojo as before. You’d rather get into bed and do nothing all day.
(4) FEELING CHEESED OFF!
Haha, is “cheesed off” politically correct? Well, here’s a good rule of thumb: When energy levels are increased, you tend to feel good. When energy levels are decreased, you tend to feel irritable and easily prone to snap.
Think of drugs like ephedrine. The resultant burst of energy makes people feel really good. Even stronger drugs make people feel euphoric.
The opposite is true. When energy levels are decreased, you should probably stay away from people, lest you bite their head off!
(5) FEELING STRESSED MORE THAN USUAL
A slow metabolism can cause you to feel more stressed. And being stressed can actually cause your metabolism to slow (according to a new study).
So if you find yourself more anxious and worried, that can also be a sign.

HOW TO BOOST A SLOW METABOLISM
I don’t think “boost” is the right word. We should talk about “re-setting” our metabolism. Once we reset, we can lose weight again more easily and feel a lot better.
(1) EAT MAINTENANCE CALORIES OR ABOVE
Yep, you need to eat more. Eat your maintenance calories for 7-10 days. This will allow your metabolism to come back to normal.
From there, cut calories slowly week on week for ongoing fat loss. But do NOT reduce your protein intake if you lift.
(2) START WEIGHT TRAINING
If you don’t already, start lifting! Weight training is so much more effective than cardio even for losing fat. There are many reasons for this, which you can read about in my article “Cardio Sucks“.
But one point is that your metabolism will be raised for 36-48hrs after training with weights (because of the muscle repair required). The increased calorie-burn from cardio ends when the session ends – not so good.

Resetting metabolism is critical. Taking a week or two of eating maintenance or slightly above is good. I also like to take at least 1 day a week when dieting to ‘refeed’ and stoke the metabolic fire if you will.
