Just a few weeks ago, a 22yr old student at Iowa State student called Kyle Thomson, died following a bench pressing accident.
He was benching 315lbs at the time, a weight he had handled before and was comfortable handling.
This is so sad and my heart goes out to his family.
The only details I have is that he lost his grip during his set and the barbell fell on his neck. He was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
I don’t know if this is true of Kyle, but I sometimes see others benching without their thumbs wrapped around the bar. I think this is insane.
Wrap your thumb around the bar so that it’s very unlikely that you will lose your grip. Use spotters and/or safety pins set in line with your chest, so that if the worst happens, the bar falls onto the pins, not your body.
