While I’ve talked about my homemade pre-workout cocktail before (see here), this time I have a high-quality video made by MuscleHack reader Juanito Taveras.
Juanito is a film-student and long time follower of MuscleHack. He used his skills to create this impressive 3 minute video telling you:
- The advantages of a pre-workout
- The ingredients
- How to make this homemade cocktail
- How and when to take it
Here is the video. Please like it on YouTube and subscribe to the MuscleHack channel here. Juanito’s current YouTube channel is here, and his new videos will be on this channel; go ahead and subscribe for more.

NOTE: A lot of guys and girls on my cutting program Total Six Pack Abs also tell me they LOVE this pre-workout, especially when they start getting under 10% body fat and the Calories are getting lower. This helps POWER them through awesome workouts and still HAMMER out personal bests!
So the 3 active ingredients are Caffeine, AAKG, and Beta-Alanine.
I’ve found the CHEAPEST prices for these anywhere online here. If you can find them cheaper, let me know so I can share with everyone else…
(1) You can get 100 x 200mg pills of caffeine for just $5.69 – that’s enough for 100 workouts!
(2) You can get a whopping 500g of AAKG for $24.96! Since I recommend you take 4g of AAKG 30mins before a workout, that’s enough for 125 workouts!
(3) And you can get 250g of Beta-Alanine for the stupid price of just $9.99! I recommend 2g of beta-alanine in this pre-workout cocktail.
[All prices correct as of 15th July 2015]
Even if you train 5 times a week, that’s 25 weeks (125 workouts). If you train 3 times per week, that’s 42 weeks. With a week off every 10 weeks, that comes to 6-months or almost a year’s supply (for a 3-day training routine) of an awesome pre-workout for $40.64!!
Since a 2.45lb tub of NO-Xplode currently retails for $44.64, and if you use 2 scoops per workout, you only get 25 workouts per tub! Compare that to my 125-workout formula and you can see how ridiculously cheap this homemade alternative is!
NOTE: If you live in UK/Europe, go to MyProtein and get your caffeine, AAKG, and beta-alanine for dirt cheap prices.
How To Take It
[Edit: As of 2015, I now advise that you can take up to 300mg caffeine per cocktail if you feel you need it]
Mix 4g of AAKG and 2g of Beta-Alanine in water (or whatever sugar-free drink you like) about 30 minutes before you train. Take 200mg or 300mg caffeine(I currently take 300mg) while drinking it for a very POTENT and POWERFUL pre-workout cocktail!
If you want it to taste like NO-Xplode, mix in a little sugar-free cordial to the water to make it taste great (AAKG is a little nasty on the taste buds).
Go hook yourself up with this powerful cocktail and take it before you next THT workout for even better gains!

P.S. If any of you guys out there have crazy skills like Juanito does to make this video and want to contribute something to MuscleHack, just let me know. I can help get your name out there and it will look great on your CV. I’d appreciate it since my technical skills are severely limited lol. Anything is welcome: video skills, audio, photoshop skills to design diagrams etc., anything at all. Just leave me a comment below or go through the contact page.
I’m totally trying this!!
Wow, this could actually save me a small fortune! Thanks for putting this together. Mark and Juanito 😀
I suspect that it would not hurt to include creatine-mono-hydrate which is very inexpensive for how much you get when you buy a jar that can last close to a year.
@Robert. Creatine is better taken with your post-workout whey. The body is in a better state for creatine uptake after a workout.
Mark,
Do you have consistent (or any) studies that demonstrate that this is true regarding creatine uptake? From the science I’ve looked at, it really makes no difference. Creatine has been measured in the urine after supplementation and it is pretty much equally absorbed regardless when you take it or what you take it with.
The only thing that slightly increases it is with a huge bolus of sugar (almost 100g), and nobody wants to do that. Plus, you’re only gaining another percent or two of creatine with that, so relatively speaking it is useless.
Thanks for all of your hard work–love the site.
@Doug. I’m not aware that pre or post creatine uptake has been studied. However, if you take it before, the cells are already saturated with creatine phosphate. There will be little room for uptake and I can guess that it may even decrease your body’s sensitivity to creatine supplementation. If taking after, a lot of creatine has been depleted and there is plenty of room in the “tanks” to take in creatine for conversion to creatine phosphate inside the muscle.
So I recommend creatine post-or-intra-workout along with whey.
Hi Mark. What do you think about upping your mix to taking 4g of β-alanine as used in the study?

@Chris. Sure. I’m all for experimentation with this. Give it a whirl.
Great video, I’m loaded with cash so I’ll just keep wasting my money on the top brands… Only joking that was ace I’m going shopping tomorrow for the ingredients
I add extra L-Citrulline DL Malate 1:1 powder to my current preworkout, any thoughts on adding it to your mix?
Don’t you think there are better NO boosters than Arginine AAKG ? Citrulline or Agmatine or Nitrates….all proven to give better results than Arginine with way less dosages.
