Yes, you read that correctly. The next Total Anabolism book will be 4.0, not 3.2.
I started working on it last week and was inspired to skip past the next smaller update and create the next generation of THT!
In short, it’s going to keep you training and growing for YEARS to come. It’s a whole new monster!
I’m totally excited about this! 4.0 is GAME CHANGER! (it will still be free of course).
One important note: I’m dropping the name ‘Total Anabolism’ and instead referring to the book as Targeted Hypertrophy Training 4.0.
Why? Total Anabolism was the umbrella name for the original books, which contained details of both the MuscleHack workouts AND the nutritional strategies.
In newer versions I really wanted to flesh out all the details of this powerful training program, so I omitted the diet stuff and stuck to the training.
Version 4.0 will be titled ‘THT 4.0′ to more accurately reflect the content.
However, after its release I’m going to work on a free nutrition book too. This will of course contain details on both the MANS and GLAD diets. But the REALLY cool part is that I will be putting out FREE downloadable programs that do all that complicated math for you.
You won’t have to sit down with the “Katch-McArdle formula” anymore. Neither will you have to ask around for how much protein you should be getting. It’ll all be done for you! (Again, both this book and the programs will be free of charge).
Sometime in the future I will also get an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) and see if I can put out a physical book for you all to have.
The issue is this: I don’t want to make any money out of it, so how do you get a physical book made and shipped for free? I suppose people wouldn’t mind paying the postage and packaging if the book itself was free. Anyone know a publisher that likes to do charity?! 🙁
One way around this, and something I WILL be doing in the future, is putting THT out on Amazon’s Kindle for free. I know Amazon will charge me to do this but that’s cool. It means that Kindle users will be able to go to Amazon and get the THT book for free…and in a matter of seconds! (I’ve got a Kindle by the way and I highly recommend it, especially if you’re a book nerd like me).
Now to the big quesion: When’s THT 4.0 coming out? Because this is a bigger update than I had first anticipated, it will be available in May ’11, not April as I had originally planned for 3.2. Sorry to keep you guys waiting. I know you wanted it a little sooner but MuscleHack is just 1 guy – me.
It’s my job to keep you happy and I’m sure this baby won’t disappoint! 🙂
So that’s you all up to date!
If you have any questions/comments/recommendations, please leave them below.
Your Buddy,
Mark

Looking fwd to it.
Can’t wait. Thanks for all the hard work you put in. I’ve truly transformed my life and body for the better thanks to all the free and valuable info you put out there.
Mark,
Looking forward to the program. Check out http://www.lulu.com for an on demand book printing service – an easy way to get printed items out for those who want it.
D
Sounds great. I think i have been working out wrong because i am not getting the gains i would like. Hopefully this book will map everything out for me.
What about a BlackBerry APP?
Hi Mark
Looking forward to 4.0! I’ve read all the stuff you’ve put out and like your consistent approach to training and nutrition which you often back up with correct scientific reasoning and studies.
I’ve been training on and off for about 10 years and have experimented with the majority of workouts and exercises out there. I went through a phase of relying on Muscle & Fitness but it wasn’t until I read Body By Science by Doug McGuff that my whole outlook changed, which is when I started reading your blog.
Myself and 2 training partners are now starting to see the same results from one 12 minute workout per week (as recommended by Body By Science and stemming from Jones’ Nautilus philosophy) as we did when training hard 5 days a week.
I’ve noted you often refer to Jones when discussing HIT so my question is this:
What is the likelihood that the THT workout you recommend constitutes overtraining?
Would really appreciate hearing your thoughts and reasoning on this.
Kind regards
Max
Amazing work man… I’m definitely looking forward to 4.0! Keep it up, you’re really making a big difference with the work you do.
Mark,
Will any of this be integrated into a TSPA update? I will still be on that for a couple more months so I will have to wait to do THT 4.0
Thanks
@Max: I can’t see how the THT workout (I just started 3.1) could be considered overtraining. Most body parts are hit with two or three exercises, with only two or three sets (to failure), with a whole week for recovery.
As for any musclehead magazine, my rule of thumb is to ignore them. Almost every bodybuilder featured in them uses steroids, so their recovery system is completely different. Not to mention, their main goal is to sell the supplements advertised across from every workout shown.
Dude.. You really rock!!!
I can’t wait to see ur THT 4.0 and the Nutrition Book. Your TSPA changed life for me. I am now a biggest fan & follower of you & your works.
I am really amazed by your thought still sticking the your moto of free health info with such huge fan base.
All the best on the new upcoming projects.
Regards,
Sabry
The “like” button won’t push for some reason, so LIKE LIKE LIKE!!! I can’t wait to read it! The last one, and of course TSPA, have made such a difference in my training and how I feel. It’s amazing! Can’t wait to see what else is in store for us. Also, I think it’s wonderful that you do this for free. That’s one of the reasons I trust what you say. You’re not trying to make a ton of money off peoples ignorance and insecurities…you just want to help, and that’s amazing to me. Thank you!
What about making one available for the ipad? Thanks for all your hard work!!!!!!
Thanks, everyone. You’re all awesome!
@Darius. I’ve heard of Lulu before. I’ll check them out again. I’m wondering what the cost would be. I’m sure they charge for creating the book as well as postage and packaging, so I don’t want to put people off getting their hands on it.
@David. I’d love to have a blackberry app out there. I also want to get an android app out too since I’m pretty sure my next phone will be the Samsung Galaxy S2. I just need a developer who is willing to do it.
@Max Davies. None. If THT involved overtraining, people wouldn’t be getting progressively stronger, which is the best test for overtraining. Body by Science is an awesome book, especially in its debunking of “cardio”. However, I disagree with the protracted periods of recovery. My own HIT cycle involves 3 x full body workouts with 1 set to failure. People get bigger and stronger on it. Also, I include research in the book showing recovery being complete in as little as 36hrs. But it depends on how many sets-to-failure you do. What I think the program you are using indicates is that we don’t DE-COMPENSATE as quickly as we once thought, but it isn’t saying that accelerated results couldn’t be had by increasing the frequency a little. Remember that both Arthur Jones and Mike Mentzer both used a 3-day a week HIT program early in their career and had amazing results.
mark!! God has blessed you. Thank you for blessing us muscle hackers. Your name and website is spreading like wild fire. keep it up.
@footballplaya3k. No this won’t affect TSPA at all.
@Sabry, Thanks, my man.
@Brandi McAtee. Maybe you weren’t logged into Facebook when you were trying to click the button?
@Dale. That would be cool. You mean through iBooks?
@Jason 🙂 🙂 🙂 Thanks a lot, mate.
Hey Mark,
It’s nice to see that you are still handing us these programs. I’ve had each of your Total Anobolism programs and love them. I started to get into HIT a few years ago of and on but your programs seem to have that little extra push to them. I feel that you are the only one out there on the net that is not trying to drain us of all our money as well. The rest of these fitness guru’s have completely seperate styles of workouts but yet promote each other on their own site. I like how you stick to your programs and help your readers while asking for nothing in return.
@Bob. You hit the nail on the head. They couldn’t care less about people’s results. They all promote each other’s products because they earn huge commissions on the sales. They call them ‘joint ventures’. How do I know? I’ve been contacted by most of them. They offer like 60% commissions or more on sales of products up to $67. They give you a pre-typed email to send out to your mailing list. At over 25k people on my list, I’d make a killing from sending just one email out. Furthermore, they would then promote my book to their own mailing list. We’re talking tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people being exposed to the sales page for my own book and theirs. I would make an absolute fortune in a very short period of time. But those guys are vermin in my book. Everyone needs to make money, but if you get it promoting products you don’t personally believe in, you’ve sold out! On my home page I state clearly that I will NEVER sell out…and I mean it. A couple of years ago I had some ebook ads in my sidebar as sponsors. But people were asking me questions about the products and I felt that they were mistaking the sponsors for personal recommendations. Although I was earning some revenue from them, I removed them when I became aware of that. Although I don’t earn as much as I could by not networking with those people, I like the fact that MuscleHack sends out a clear, effective, non-contradictory message to those who are willing to listen….and almost all of it’s free. (But I’ve got bills to pay like everyone else, and a little girl who could spend all day in ‘Toys R Us’, lol. So I have to charge for some things. I think most people understand that).
Thanks.
The guitar instruction websites do the same thing. The lucky part is that there is a small group of them who promote each others’ products, but the products are quality and reasonably priced. As for bodybuilding, they seem to be more of the vermin variety, and they seem to often contradict their own training methods week to week.
Hey Mark,
I’ve just recently found your web site through a friend who highly recommended it, I haven’t downloaded Total Anabolism 3.0 yet but was about too and use this program but now that I know 4.0 is on its way very soon do you think I should wait or start with 3.0 for now?
Thanks.
@Sammy. I think it’s a fair practice if (1) You can genuinely recommend the product because you believe in it, and (2) It doesn’t contradict your own teachings. Otherwise you just serve to further confuse people.
@Jeff. No don’t wait. Grab it and start one of the cycles. You can seamlessly integrate with 4.0 when it comes out.
i realy appreciate what you’re doing for us. I would be happy to donate at least 20 bucks for tht 4.o and all the other goodies u talk about. Thanks mark you’re the bomb!
Mark, Three of my friends and I have been on your recommended program for six weeks we are about to start the fullbody three day a week cycle we all have been getting stronger and feeling better! We are very greatfull for your shared knowledge thanks Joe Flint Mi. USA
@Steven. @Joe. Thanks very much, guys.
Mark. Wow. Just… wow. I can’t wait! All the best from (mostly) sunny Santiago, where I’ll hang my hat for another week or so!
I have so much respect for you and what you do. You really are THE best place to go for everything fitness. Can’t wait for 4.0
