A Canadian novelist, called Craig Davidson, totally transformed his body in just 16 weeks…with steroids!
This story may be familiar to some of you, but it was news to me when I saw a friend comment on this Guardian story on facebook the other day.
He says he was inspired to start using these drugs by a character in his first novel:
My character goes down dark roads. For the sake of the book, I thought I’d travel those roads with him. He begins to work out obsessively. I began to work out obsessively. He joins a boxing club. I joined a boxing club. He takes steroids. I took steroids.
He states his steroid cycle was as follows:
- Dianabol (10mg tabs, 3 per day for the first 4 weeks)
- Testosterone Cypionate (500mg per week, 10 weeks)
- Equipoise (400mg per week, 10 weeks)
- Nolvadex (anti-oestrogen drug; 1 to 4 pills daily, depending on week)
- Proviron (male menopause drug, 25mg daily)
- HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, used during Post Cycle Therapy to restore natural testosterone levels – 500iu twice weekly, administered with an insulin needle)
While this may look like death to you and I, he says, “it’s a fairly mild cycle” compared to the dosage and cocktail of drugs that professional bodybuilders take.
The side-effects of this concoction?
He reports shrunken testicles, hair loss, cranial swelling, insomnia, and gynomastia (bitch tits). Gross!
After 12 weeks he peaks at 240lbs, having added 35lbs.
But then it comes time to end his experiment. If the negative side-effects weren’t enough, he states the following…
“One morning I wake up and everything has changed. The first thing I notice upon waking is that I feel… well, good. No sluggishness, only minor joint pain. Genuinely refreshed. Then, on my way to the bathroom, I sense a new weight between my legs – my testicles! Fellas, where have you been? Great to have you back, boyos!
The feeling of elation lasts exactly 10 paces: the distance from my bed to the bathroom mirror. I’m staring at a human boneyard. Where are my pecs? I see two shrivelled bags hanging off my chest. My arms – dear lord, my arms! Shapeless shoestrings dangling from a pair of rotten-apple shoulders. My stomach looks like a deflated clown balloon. My legs belong to a coma victim. I step on the scale: 222lb! I’ve shed 13lb overnight.”
He goes on to talk bout his massive decreases in strength in the post-cycle period. Like “Popeye without his spinach.”
The muscle and strength loss sends him into a depressed state…
“I fell into a week-long funk. I cleaned my apartment out: the unopened cans of tuna, the uneaten protein powder – all of it went in the bin. I ordered a large pizza, pepperoni and double cheese. I wolfed it down with gulps of Pepsi. I wanted to get fat and disgusting.”
He started out at 205lbs and weighed 208 after the cycle. He states in the Guardian article, “I now weigh 170lbs”.
So was it worth it?

P.S. I don’t know whether or not the before and after shots here represent his peak gains, but can I just say that it’s not that impressive to me. I’ve seen better natural transformations here at MuscleHack and in real life. Someone rush him a copy of Total Six Pack Abs! 😀

That being said, it does provide a good example for out of shape gym novices that they need to hit the gym and diet hard for a while and do some serious research before attempting to use any kind of ‘enhancements.’
This guy should have done TSPA and then used THT for a year or two, then MAYBE start off with about half of the Test Cyp he used and ONLY that, to see what that did for him.
Stacking all of that stuff, in those amounts was a totally ignorant move.
Please explain to me why someone in their right mind, despite all the warning against steroid use would gamble with their body. He’s probably better off at 170lbs he was in horrible shape to begin with. The greatest gamble I’ve taken is to use GH max tablets from Universal which I think is a pretty reputabke company. I think proper diet and exercise will get me more in the next 12wks of my training than the absolutely ridiculous cocktail of steroids I’ve seen here.
PS I love my testicles I wouldn’t do anything to put them at risk.
I know of many friends who have used roids and hve had far better gains on much milder stacks. They do loose some size post cycle but the truth is some of it stays and once you have been at the gym a couple years it seems size gains max out and streroids give you a new ceiling. I don’t do them because I have a problem with Balding and the expense but seems like with most things gym related things there are degrees of success and danger
Yes I completely agree with Doug. Guys think all muscled bodies come from steroid bottles. They don’t even touch the weights unless they’re all injected and tableted up with enhancement products. MADNESS!!! Your muscles blow up fast with steroids but deflate equally fast without them – AND YOU CAN’T STAY ON THEM ALL THE TIME IT’S VERY DANGEROUS!
But guys who know what they are doing train the muscles to their “limit” first. Push the body until you see muscles popping out everywhere! Then, if that’s your choice, use enhancements ONLY MILDLY to push you further and further, increasing strength so that when you come off a steroid course you don’t fall flat on your face and lose all your gains!!!
There are TONS of resources clearly indicating what BEGINNER courses are and progressing slowly towards advanced courses.
NEVER rely only on steroids to make you big! That’s really silly!
Oh yes, and STOP saying every muscled guy is a “rhoid head”!!! It’s hard work my jealous friend, not just shooting up steroids!!!
Every drug even food has side effects and with any drug even prescribed drugs effects wear off after stopping. Steroid can be used for good, they’re used for good in hospitals every day! Steroids are the top for instance when its a great car ppl say “this is the Honda on steroids!” And it’s supposed to bea good thing. Every drug known to man gets abused… even food. Obviously this guy didn’t know what he was doing.I don’t take steroids and never had but I am not against them either

Its so sad stupid stories like this by complete idiots give steroids a bad name.i have taken steroids over many many years with no side effects.Blood work and blood pressure all good.And i went from 140lbs to 242lbs in shape.Its use not abuse that’s the key
Steroids get a bad rap because any tom dick and harry are starting to take them and you also have to whether they are getting what they paid for, you never know what you are injecting unless you actually produce the stuff. So that’s the only downfall. I myself have used steroids and gained a few kg’s and lost some of it but I wont go and do that again for the very reason that I just don’t know what im putting in my body. I speak to a few guy’s that are heavy into it and the one thing that keeps popping up is that when they come off the cycle there’s depression and they loose their desire to train. It’s not the same to them anymore, they have been bitten by the drug and have the mentality that if they are not using then it’s pointless to train, this is where abuse of steroids come to play.. they get to a point where they just can’t stop and this is where the problems start.
The thing is he has nothing there to prevent his muscle loss, the thing people forget is Steroids do help but there NOT miracle drug, they have to be used properly and stacked well with a good protein, liver support vitamins and a clean diet with carbs…If these steps are followed sure you will lose a bit of size and strength but nothing like this guy. I will tri-tren to boost myself, or test prop for 6 weeks when i come i do lose size and strength but NOTHING like this guy, i take OPTIMUM PURE WHEY with good diet, plus vitamins and liv52..And i weigh 17stones of hard muscle no water.
I believe everyone is free to do whatever the F they want. If they want to smoke, get wasted, do drugs, or kill themselves, then go do it! That said, I am not against shortcuts to your goals. I have never taken steroids, not because I am the most honest guy on Earth and love things the hard way, but because I don’t appreciate all the side effects they cause.
I will not take the risk. It’s bad enough we are being poisoned, dumbed down, and given cancer by GMOs, fluoride in the tap water, preservatives, aspartame, sucralose, and so much other crap in our food.
Also, I don’t EVER listen to a juicer’s advice on training. Their bodies work VERY differently from us naturals. So I say, FY steroids!

Doug is 100% right, he really did everything wrong by the sounds of it. And doing the amount he did for the first time? Just stupid and reckless.
This whole thing seems so dangerous and idiotic on so many levels I don’t know where to begin, as we say in the south “Bless his heart” aka you’re an idiot. I guess he missed the whole diet and exercise version of getting in shape. The side effects alone should have stopped the whole experiment. Did he not think to get into any kind of shape beforehand? I’m completely naive about steroids but just reading his drug cocktail list had my eyebrows raising.
Just a side note: From a girl’s perspective, sacrificing your balls and hair for some nice pecs is not a good look.
